Privacy Policy

Effective March 10, 2026

Protegz is built for students, and we take your privacy seriously. This policy explains in plain language what data we collect, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. This policy is part of our Terms of Service.

Who We Are

Protegz is an educational platform where students learn competition math by teaching an AI partner. We are based in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you have questions about this policy, email us at privacy@protegz.com.

What We Collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your email address, display name, role (student or educator), and birth month and year. Students also provide a grade level and competition level preferences. Students under 13 are the exception: until a parent or guardian has approved the account, we hold their birth month and year and what it takes to reach that adult, and the rest waits. See Children’s Privacy below.

Coaching conversations

When you coach your AI protege, we store the conversation so you can pick up where you left off and so your protege can learn from your teaching over time.

Content moderation

Messages are automatically scanned for content policy violations to help maintain a safe learning environment. When a message is flagged, we record the type of violation and its severity. Flagged content is redacted from coaching transcripts. Administrators can review flagged content for safety purposes. We do not use content moderation data for advertising or any purpose unrelated to platform safety.

Learning progress

We track which problems you have worked on and your coaching quality scores. This data powers the progress dashboard and helps educators monitor student growth.

Usage data

We collect anonymous usage analytics such as page views and feature usage. This helps us understand how the product is used and where to improve it. We do not send your name or email to analytics providers — only a pseudonymous identifier.

Guest trial data

If you try Protegz without creating an account, we store your coaching conversations on our servers so you can resume where you left off. Guest conversations are not linked to any personal identity.

Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and local storage to operate and improve Protegz. These fall into three categories:

Essential. These cookies are necessary for the service to function. They keep you signed in, remember your role and preferences, and maintain your session as you navigate between pages. If you try Protegz as a guest, an essential cookie tracks your trial usage.

Functional. We use local storage to remember settings like your daily session and coaching progress so the app loads faster and preserves your place.

Analytics. We use pseudonymous analytics cookies (PostHog and Google Analytics) to understand how the product is used. No personal information such as your name or email is sent to our analytics providers. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

We do not use cookies for advertising, cross-site tracking, or to serve third-party ads.

How We Use Your Data

  • Provide the service: Store your conversations, track progress, and personalize your protege’s learning.
  • Support educators: If you are in a classroom, your educator can see your coaching progress, summary scores, and content moderation flags.
  • Maintain safety: We automatically scan messages for content policy violations to keep the platform safe and age-appropriate. Flagged content may be reviewed by administrators.
  • Improve the product: We use anonymous usage data to fix bugs, improve the experience, and prioritize new features. We may also use anonymized and aggregated coaching data to develop and improve our AI models and educational tools.
  • Research: We may use de-identified, aggregated data for educational research, such as studying how teaching-based learning improves student outcomes. Any published research uses only aggregate statistics, never individual data.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not serve ads.

Service Providers

We use trusted third-party services to operate Protegz, including providers for hosting, authentication, data storage, AI model inference, and analytics. These providers process data on our behalf and are contractually bound to use it only to provide their services.

Your coaching conversations are processed by AI models to generate your protege’s responses. When we use third-party AI providers, we enforce zero data retention (ZDR), meaning they do not store your prompts or responses after generating a reply. We also select providers that do not use customer inputs to train their models. Analytics providers receive only pseudonymous usage events, not your name, email, or conversation content.

The specific services we use may change over time as we improve the product. We will always ensure that any provider we work with meets our standards for data protection.

Data Retention

We retain your account data and coaching conversations for the duration of your active service plus 90 days, or until you request deletion, whichever is sooner. After that, we securely delete or anonymize the information. We may retain anonymized or aggregated information for product improvement and research.

Children’s Privacy

Protegz is designed for students, including those under 13. We collect only the information necessary to provide the educational service.

A parent or guardian approves before we collect anything

Students sign up themselves and give their birth month and year. If that makes a student under 13, we ask only for what we need to reach a parent or guardian: an address to write to, and the first name we should use when we write. We then email that address, describe what we would collect and why, and include a link that approves the account. A second note follows, so nothing about the account gets decided without that adult having seen it twice.

Until that approval arrives, we hold only what the approval step itself needs: an address that reaches a parent or guardian, the first name to use when we write to them, and the birth month and year the student gave us at signup. The student can browse Protegz while they wait, but cannot start coaching, and nothing about that browsing is recorded. If we never hear back, the account closes and all of it goes with it.

Once a parent or guardian says yes, the account opens and we begin collecting what the product runs on: the name the student chooses for their study partner, their grade, and their math conversations. The birth month and year we were already holding becomes part of the account at that point, so that we know when it stops being a child’s account and this section stops applying to it. We also keep a record of the approval itself, because that is what makes the consent verifiable.

Students in classrooms

Joining through an educator’s classroom changes none of this. An educator cannot approve an account on a family’s behalf, so a student under 13 who arrives with a classroom code takes exactly the same path as everyone else: a parent or guardian is asked, and coaching starts once they say yes.

Parent and guardian rights

Parents or guardians may review their child’s data, request corrections, request deletion of their child’s account and all associated data, or withdraw consent at any time by contacting us at privacy@protegz.com. We will process these requests within 7 business days. The emails we send about an account also carry a link that closes it and removes what we hold, and a reply reaches a real person.

Data minimization

We limit the personal information we collect from students to what is needed to provide the service: a display name, birth month and year, grade level, and coaching conversations. For a student under 13 we hold less than that until a parent or guardian has approved the account: their birth month and year, and what it takes to reach that adult. We do not collect physical addresses, phone numbers, or photos from students.

Your Rights

  • Access: You can view your profile, coaching history, and progress at any time through the app.
  • Correction: You can edit your profile information from your profile page.
  • Deletion: You can request deletion of your account and data from your settings page or by emailing us. We process deletion requests within 7 business days.
  • Data export: Contact us at privacy@protegz.com to request a copy of your data.

Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, including encrypted authentication, HTTPS for all data in transit, and access controls that ensure users can only see their own data.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The effective date at the top of this page indicates when it was last updated.
